한국기업의 정착 및 발전사례
BIOGRAPHENE is a biotech startup dedicated to developing novel graphene-based drugs for neurodegenerative diseases. BIOGRAPHENE’s primary targets include Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and Niemann-Pick disease type C (in collaboration with the NIH). BIOGRAPHENE is a spin-off company from Seoul National University and was incorporated as a legal entity in the state of California in 2020.
바이오그래핀(BIOGRAPHENE)은 서울대학교 스핀오프로 설립된 바이오텍 스타트업으로, 현재 캘리포니아 주 로스앤젤레스에 정식 법인을 설립하여 성장하고 있습니다. 탄소 신소재인 그래핀을 기반으로 한 신경퇴행성 질환 치료제 개발을 목표로 하는 회사로서 파킨슨병, 알츠하이머병, 니만피크병 C형 등을 주요 대상 질병으로 삼고 있습니다. 특히 니만피크병 C형에 대해 2019년부터 미국립보건원과의 공동 개발을 진행하고 있으며 미국 내 임상시험 진입을 준비하고 있습니다.
Dr. Je Min Yoo is the CEO/COO of BIOGRAPHENE. During his undergraduate years at Johns Hopkins University, he worked as a research assistant at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, where he studied the underlying causes of sporadic and genetic Parkinson’s disease. Then he joined Graphene Research Laboratory to pursue his Ph.D. at Seoul National University and conceived the idea of employing graphene quantum dots for Parkinson’s disease, the outcomes of which have become the basis of BIOGRAPHENE.
유제민 박사 (Je Min Yoo, Ph.D.)는 바이오그래핀의 미국 대표(CEO) 및 운영책임 (COO)을 맡고 있습니다. 존스홉킨스 대학교 화학과 학부과정 중 의과대학 신경과에서 파킨슨병 관련 연구를 수행하였고, 이를 바탕으로 서울대학교에서 박사과정 동안 그래핀 기반 신소재의 파킨슨병 치료제로서의 가능성을 제시하였습니다. 박사학위 취득 후 바이오그래핀에 합류하여 2020년 캘리포니아 주에 법인을 설립하여 운영해오고 있습니다.
ASTA Co. was established in January 2006 under the vision of “promoting human happiness and health” and developed the next-generation disease diagnosis system for the first time in Korea. The microbial diagnostic equipment has been successfully commercialized and is preparing for FDA approval to enter the US. Cancer diagnosis equipment is scheduled to be commercialized next year, starting with a pilot project this year. Industrial inspection equipment in semiconductor and display industries are also aiming to be commercialized next year.
ASTA Co.는 2006 년 1 월 “인간의 행복과 건강 증진”이라는 비전 아래 설립되어 국내 최초로 Maldi-Tof 질량분석 기술을 기반으로 차세대 질병 진단 시스템을 개발했습니다. 2017년 미생물 진단 장비는 성공적으로 상용화되었으며 현재 미국 FDA 승인을 준비 중입니다. 암 진단 장비는 올해 시범 사업을 시작으로 내년 상용화 될 예정입니다. 반도체 및 디스플레이 산업의 산업용 검사 장비도 내년 상용화를 목표로 정부, 대기업과 공동연구를 진행하고 있습니다.
Hyung Jong Kim (CEO) is managing ASTA US Inc., ASTA’s US corporation. Majored in Business Administration and Economics at Yonsei University and studied MBA at Washington University in St. Louis Olin business school. He joined ASTA in 2017 as executive officer of the Business Planning Office and conducted financing, investment, and M&A. Since 2019, he has been in charge of overseas sales and marketing business in China and in the US.
김현종 대표는 ASTA의 미국법인인 ASTA US Inc. 의 미국 대표(C.E.O)로서 미국 사업을 총괄하고 있습니다. 연세대학교에서 경영학과 경제학을 전공하고 Washington University in St. Louis Olin school에서 MBA 과정을 졸업했습니다. 2017년 ASTA에 합류하여 경영기획실을 이끌면서 바이오 산업내 재무, 자금조달, 투자, M&A 등의 업무를 총괄하였으며 2019년부터 ASTA 미국법인의 사업을 운영하고 있습니다.

Steve Karp
Steven Karp is the Executive Director, Innovation Services at the California Life Sciences Institute (CLSI), building and managing its accelerator programs for early stage life science companies. Since 2013, CLSI’s core program, FAST, has supported 69 California companies which have collectively raised more than $1 billion since being in the program. CLSI also runs accelerator programs for groups worldwide developing innovative products in the life sciences.
Mr. Karp has extensive expertise in all aspects of alliance, program and operations management in the life sciences. He has directed development and tech transfer programs for numerous biomedical products. Among these have been multiple immunology and cardiovascular therapeutics ranging from the pre-clinical stage through post marketing. He has run various collaborative research and development programs working with government, non-profits and private industry.
Prior to joining CLSI, Mr. Karp worked at the Intrexon Corporation in marketing and project management. He came to Intrexon from the Neugenesis Corporation, where he was Chief Operating Officer. Prior to that, he worked in portfolio management at Genentech and alliance management at Discovery Partners International. He attended Harvard College.
